Online dating warning after woman 'held captive'
Posted Thu Aug 30, 2007 7:44am AEST

Police are warning internet users to be careful when they form relationships in cyberspace, after arresting a man who allegedly held a Perth woman captive after meeting her online.

Per Anderson was arrested on Tuesday after a 28-year-old woman alleged he locked her and her daughter in their home for more than a week.

He has been charged with a range of offences, including deprivation of liberty.

Inspector Peter Hatch says the woman met Anderson using an internet dating service.

"We'd be asking people to protect their identity and limit the personal details you put up," he said.

Inspector Hatch says the alleged offences highlight the danger people can expose themselves to online.

"We would ask people to exercise caution when utilising the internet to meet people, whether it be by dating internet sites or other means," he said.

Inspector Hatch says online relationships should be treated with caution.

"Meeting people face to face is obviously the best gauge of what a person's like, and you do expose yourself to a degree if you purely make an assumption on someone based entirely on what you've been typing on the internet," he said.

Richard Keeves from Western Australia's Internet Association says online life should be treated the same as real life.

"Let's not do it naively; do it with open eyes," he said.

Anderson, of no fixed address, is expected to face court today.
